At-Home Learning Continues

At-Home Learning is different for every family and for each child within that family and we acknowledge that this past week may have been quite challenging for many of you. Every family’s circumstances are different, and we understand how difficult it can be to meet your own work commitments while trying to help your children with their learning, which becomes even more complicated when you have children attending different schools. Establishing a routine that can accommodate everyone’s needs may take a little time but will hopefully be extremely valuable moving forward and we sincerely hope At-Home learning becomes a little easier each week.

This week to add a little fun we are celebrating Science week (see details below) and we encourage all of the family to get involved, even if it’s on the weekend. Who doesn’t love a good science experiment?

Look out for our upcoming Book Week celebrations, which will take place next week.

At this stage the current Lock down is in place until 12.01 am Sunday 22 August.

Once again, we wish to thank every one for continuing to keep our students and our community safe by following NSW Health’s advice and where possible keeping your children at home.

 

Science Week

This week we celebrate National Science Week, which is an annual event designed to encourage younger people to become fascinated by the world we live in, as well as engaging science pursuits among the public. So, mums and dad, grandparents and carers take advantage of our At-Home learning situation and get involved with some of the great experiments found on our Science grid. You will be surprised by how much fun you will have. Don’t forget to take a photo or small video of your wonderful experiments and upload to Seesaw, so we can share our experience with the community.

 

The school theme for National Science Week 2021 is Food: Different by Design, which fits so well with our Stage 3 program OzHarvest and we encourage all of our Stage 3 students to attend the OzHarvest Webinar this Thursday. Details will be posted on your Seesaw account.

 

Recommended Learning

The Department has set time expectations to guide families with how much work should be assigned by schools and in which subject areas. These guidelines are adjusted based on each student’s age and level of development. Students in Early Stage 1 (ES1) and Stage 1 (St 1) are expected to participate in 2.5 hours of learning per day while students in Stages 2 and 3 are expected to be doing 3 hours of study.

Learning Grids

Students were provided with Stage based Literacy and Numeracy gids, as well as a Social task and a Wellbeing grid. Included in our learning packs was a sample timetable for a day and the recommendation that students complete at least one activity in Numeracy and Literacy per day (ES1 and St 1) and two of each for Stage 2 and 3. This week we have added 2 new grids; a science grid to support National Science week and a PE grid.

We understand that some students have been extremely busy and have completed most of their literacy and numeracy activities and we remind parents that students can also access and should be completing work on Reading Eggs/ Reading Eggspress as well as Matific. All log-ins were sent home with learning packs but if you need these again, have students ask their teacher on Seesaw.

Parents and carers can also access a large number of resources from the Department of Education, including the daily Education live videos. Here is what’s on this week.

  • Monday 16 August: Take a behind-the-scenes tour of a Qantas plane with Captain Alex Passerini.
  • Tuesday 17 August: Sweeten up your morning and make marshmallows with MasterChef Australia winner Larissa Takchi.
  • Wednesday 18 August: Write a song with Aussie singing sensations Gina Jeffreys and Max Jackson.
  • Thursday 19 August: Learn the basics of sign language with Yellow Wiggle, Emma Watkins and Auslan consultant and artist, Sue Jo Wright.
  • Friday 20 August: Get colourful and creative with an art lesson by Ken Done in his studio - The Ken Done Gallery.

If At-Home learning is extended, our next set of learning activities will be available for collection from the school gates on Monday 23rd August from 8:30am. Alternatively you can access them on-line and print them at home. 

Wellbeing Check-ins

This week we will be trialling a Wellbeing Zoom Check-in with students. At this stage, our sessions will allow students the opportunity to zoom in with their teacher on a set day of the week for half an hour. This is not a teaching lesson but a chance for students to connect with their peers and ask their teacher questions about their learning grids.

The days when students are not on their zoom Teachers will continue to post a morning message on Seesaw. Zoom links will be sent out via Seesaw to students. Students will click on the link provided and log in with their department log in (found on student log in page sent home to families) on their set day and time.

Please find attached a how to sheet for logging onto Zoom. Please be patient with us as we navigate this digital learning space. Students will also be sent prior to their first session the EHPS student expectations when using Zoom. This document will be on Seesaw. Please see attached schedule for Zoom meetings. 

Student Voice Survey

Each afternoon we post an At-home Learning survey, on Seesaw. This one-minute survey allows students to comment on their day. It helps to inform us of who is coping with At-home learning and who may need additional support. Please encourage your child/children to complete it after their day of learning.  Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you are concerned about your child’s wellbeing.

If Unwell

If your child becomes unwell while Learning At-Home, please contact the school office and we will mark them as “sick’. There will not be any expectations for a student to complete work while they are unwell.

If symptoms are consistent with those of Covid-19, then it would be advisable to have a Covid test. Parents and carers must share a copy of the negative results with the school via the school email prior to a child returning to school. Likewise, when your child is well enough to continue their studies, please inform the office, so we can mark them accordingly.

Supervision At School

Student and staff wellbeing are a priority for all NSW Department of Education Schools. It is strongly advised; staff and students work from home. The school will remain open with minimal staff for essential workers children only. Students at school will not receive formal lessons and will be supervised in mixed stage classes. They will complete the same work given to students working from home. If your child needs to attend school as you are an essential worker, please pack their learning grids as well as their exercise book.

 We do expect all students bring all completed work back to school when Level 4 restrictions are lifted.

If there are extenuating circumstances at home, that impact your child’s ability to engage with learning from home, please contact the school.
