St Bernadette's Primary School Dundas Valley

Newsletter 2021 Term 4 Week 6

FROM THE PRINCIPAL...

Dear families of St Bernadette's

My Mum had a saying for rainy weather, “It’s great weather for ducks!” Well the ducks must be pretty happy at the moment. A lot of rain has fallen over the past few days and we hear there is more to come.

This week we take a moment to remember all of those who have given or dedicated their lives to keep us and our beautiful country safe. In a liturgy led by our Year 5 students we took the time to say thank you.

So during today I invite you to take a moment and reflect on those who have sacrificed or who are still in active service.

                                                              Lest We Forget!

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL...

As we are all too aware, we live in very different times to two or three years ago and this includes what happens when our children are sick. In previous years, it was enough to send a sick note a few days after an absence and say “Johnny was sick”. Unfortunately, as we emerge from COVID, a note with ‘sick’ on it is not enough.

We are very aware of keeping our community safe and free of illness so when your child is away because they are unwell, please send a note BEFORE they return to school, with details of why they have been away. You will need to add some detail as to the type of illness and, if they have any cold or flu type symptoms, they will need to have a COVID test. While this might seem over the top, it is part of our COVID Safety plan for all students and staff. If your child reports that they are feeling sick, especially with cold and flu symptoms, you will be asked to collect them and they will need to have a negative COVID test before they can return to school.

To give a short update on COVID restrictions in schools, while there has been quite a bit of easing of restrictions in the general community, those freedoms have not really translated to school settings.  All schools in NSW will operate on updated Level 3 settings for the rest of Term 4. This means that school sports are allowed and any interschool sport can occur outside school hours. Assemblies and presentations are allowed but they must be outdoors, which can be problematic as we still must keep cohorts apart and the weather is heating up.  Fully vaccinated visitors are allowed on site to support curriculum delivery, wellbeing programs and school operations.

Unfortunately, parents will not be allowed on site for the remainder of Term 4.

We certainly look forward to a smoother, brighter and freer 2022!

Some new things to look out for:

Our Library refit has finished and we are now awaiting the new furniture. This has been a large financial undertaking with a cost of $80,000 for the structural work alone and a further $30,000 has been budgeted for furniture to arrive early in 2022.

We have also received a large grant to renovate the boys bathroom. Tenders are currently open and this work will be completed in 2022.

Bringing toys to school:

Since returning to school we have noticed a number of children bringing inappropriate toys to play with. We ask that no student bring toys that resemble weapons to school. Toy guns, knives etc do not encourage the type of play that we encourage at school so we ask that they stay at home. If these are brought to school they will be confiscated and returned to a parent.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION...

Sunday 14th November 2021

Although this is not the last Sunday of the liturgical year, the major theme found in the readings is the end of time. The events that will usher in and will take place during this time are described in apocalyptic terms. The struggles of life will culminate in a massive cosmic confrontation between the forces of good and those of evil. This last battle will be universal in scope, just like the first primordial conflict between chaos and God.

In some way, all of today’s readings state that good will finally prevail over evil. In the last days Michael, the angelic warrior of God, will rise up. In the epistle, Christ is pictured seated triumphantly at the right hand of God with his enemies under his foot, a sign of conquest. Finally, in the gospel, the Son of Man, the mysterious figure from apocalyptic literature, comes in the clouds with great power and glory. All of these images are apocalyptic; each of them is quite hopeful.

We read these stories at the close of the liturgical year, because we are coming to the conclusion of our yearly telling of the story of salvation. However, apocalyptic images are timely whenever we find ourselves in the throes of the battle with evil and it appears that we will succumb. These forms will remind us that good will be able to withstand evil. From this we will conclude that we need only trust in God.

Year 6 Religion Work Sample

This term Year 6 are learning how Jesus’ Gentile and Samaritan ministry has influenced the Catholic Church’s teaching on interfaith relations. We have analysed interactions between Jesus and Gentiles and Samaritans in the Gospels and investigated Church teaching on relations with other faiths.

We read a special Vatican II Church document which challenges us to build relationships with believers of other religions, while witnessing to Jesus. We then composed ‘Found Poems’.

As a community of Learners

Over the past fortnight we have seen some great writing, reading and number work. I have been very lucky to have some of our hard thinking Year 1 students come and share their bundling and work with groups with me.

Our Year 5 students have been working on writing poetry including some very entertaining limericks.

In Year 6, the amazing memory boxes have begun. I can’t wait to see and read about all of their fun times as they reflect on their time in Primary School.

Wet Weather

Weather forecast is meant to be heavy rainfall for Sydney over the coming days.

Just a reminder to pack raincoats or umbrellas for students.
